Chest Pain
What is chest pain and what are some of its causes?
Chest pain refers to a pain or discomfort in the chest area. Many different conditions can cause chest pain, but most life-threatening causes may involve the heart, as it may indicate a blockage in coronary arteries that supply blood flow to the heart muscle. Other causes may be related to lung, gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal problems.
This can be a serious, life-threatening health problem. It is important to seek immediate medical attention. Sudden onset of pain may indicate an onset of myocardial infarction (heart attack). A blockage in the heart blood vessel may reduce blood flow and delivery of oxygen to the heart muscle and can cause a pain, known as angina.
