Syncope

What is syncope and its causes?

Syncope describes passing out or fainting, usually accompanied by a loss of upright position (postural tone).  It is usually caused by a decrease of blood flow to the brain, preceded by a sudden drop in blood pressure, drop in heart rate, and changes in the amount of blood in different parts of the body.

This may be a warning sign of a serious underlying cardiac condition such as abnormal fast or slow heart rhythm (arrhythmia).  Other causes may be dehydration, emotional or stressful triggers, and in some cases, brain disorders.
