Hypertension
Hypertension: What is high blood pressure and why is it so dangerous?
High blood pressure is caused by the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. When it is consistently elevated, we consider this hypertension or high blood pressure.
Hypertension is known as the silent killer because it generally does not cause symptoms and is usually discovered on a routine exam or when one measures their own blood pressure. Long-term hypertension is a major contributor for the development of stroke, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, atrial fibrillation, peripheral vascular disease and other medical diseases.
Obesity, smoking, high salt diet, sedentary life style and alcohol are some of the lifestyle factors that contribute to its development.
